Natural Ways to Prevent and Deal with Toddler Tantrums
Tantrums are usually part of the daily routine with some toddlers. It could be very difficult and tiring for most of the parents to deal with them, which leads to a raising frustration within the family and may even cause issues between the parents. So it’s important to find a way to make your life easier, and to have a happy family.
Here are some tips for dealing and preventing tantrums.
-
Look through her eyes. Try to understand the reason for the tantrum. Toddlers like to be independent. For such a small child that means feeding and dressing himself, climbing the stairs, saying the big sentence. But is she can’t do any of the thinks she wants to do, then her only way of expressing her frustration comes in a form of a tantrum. So try to find out what is really causing the emotional upset and talk to her.
-
Be patient. You may need to wait a few minutes while the tantrum lasts and then have a chat to your child.
-
Make a plan. If both parents have a plan what is accepted and what is not, then things gets easier. You need to be consistent in your educational methods. Being “on one side” with your partner for the toddler is a sign this is a rule and there are no exceptions. But for you and your partner means your relationship will not be affected by your kid’s emotional upsets and you will be dealing with it as a family.
-
Show her your love. Never say things like “you bad girl!” or “I can’t stand you right now!” You may instead explain how the “good girls” should behave, and that what she has done is unacceptable. No matter how mad you are at your child, remember she is mad and upset, too. You need to be firm when denying her those sweets, for example, but give her an explanation for your reason and tell her that you love her. Offer her something to substitute the “forbidden” object, and give her a hug.
-
Don't try to argue with the child. While the tantrum lasts, there is simply no point doing it.
-
Don't let the child feel rewarded or punished for a tantrum. You want her to see that tantrums, which are horrible for her, change nothing, either for or against her. If she threw the tantrum because you would not let her go out into the garden, don't change your mind and let her out now. Equally, if you had been going to take her for a walk before she had the tantrum, you should take her all the same, as soon as she is calm again.
-
Give it some time. Your toddler will get bigger, stronger and more able to manage things better; that means that she will meet less extreme frustration in her everyday life.
There are also a few natural remedies you could use to calm your child and prevent tantrums.
-
Relaxing bath. Try adding a few drops of lavender oil into her bath, play a nice and relaxing music, and even darken the room. The effect will be almost immediate and she will be much more relaxed over the next few hours.
-
Homemade food. Avoid any food with additives and preservatives. There are a few studies proving that food additives may lead to emotional disorders in small children.
-
Avoid sweets. Sugar is bad for your child’s emotional health and for her immune system, too. Substitute sweets with fruits where sugar naturally occurs in an easy-digestible form.
-

-
