Soaps, washing and bathing
It’s quite possible that fighting the germs using antibacterial powders, soaps, lotions, liquids and even baby wipes is actually making things worse. Studies have shown that children brought up in over-cleaned houses are more likely to develop allergies, asthma, or eczema. By killing the bad bacteria you also kill the good bacteria, naturally occurring on our skin. This creates greater sensitivity to bacteria and makes it difficult for our bodies to fight with them, once exposed (outside of home in buses, on the street, playgrounds, friends’ houses, etc.)
Wash your baby with natural organic soaps to prevent him from those nasty chemicals and potential allergy reactions. For a 100 per cent natural “soap” you may use a handful of fine oats in a linen cloth, soaked for 10min in hot water just before bath, and gently rubbing it onto your child’s skin. This will wash and purify him perfectly and will even sooth his sensitive skin.
Green laundry
The best thing you can do for sensitive baby skin is not to cover it with synthetic chemicals, and use non-bio liquids, which means they are also free from enzymes. Wash nappies with pure soap and warm water. Make your own non-toxic cleansers with simple ingredients such as baking soda, tea tree oil and vinegar. An earth-friendly tip is to turn your washing machine on 30’C and keep it there – baby’s clothes are not that dirty and they do not need harsh chemicals or hot water to be cleaned.
