Feng Shui For Kids

How to help your children grow and develop in a positive way and enhance family harmony

Did you know that there is negative stimulation in the home that affects your child‘s behaviour, his health and even his grades? This energy is invisible for the eyes, but very powerful and your child can feel it. Feng Shui, which is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China, comes here to help. It is based on knowledge about how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.

"Feng" means "wind" and "shui" means "water". In Chinese culture gentle wind and clear water have always been associated with good harvest and good health. Feng Shui is based on the Taoist vision and understanding of nature, particularly on the idea that the land is alive and filled with Chi, or energy.
The way we decorate children's spaces and bedrooms and the way we distribute the furniture should be done by following the Feng Shui principles in order to achieve harmony and help your children feel comfortable in that space.

One first important aspect to think about when it comes to a child's room is the colours for walls and the decoration in general. According to feng shui, a child's room should be in earth colours such as light oranges, terracotta or warm yellows. These colours would make them feel safe. Another feng shui colour combination is pastel green and light violet, which will have a calming and soothing effect on your little one.

Colours that are cold, such as blue or grey shades should never predominate in a child's room, since they could bring them insecurity feelings. It is also important to remark that too bright colours are not recommended for a child's bedroom. If your child is very active, you should balance this through the colours you choose for his bedroom; they should be light and in pastel shades. On the other hand, if your child is quiet, you should choose warm orange or yellow colours which would balance his personality.

As with all bedrooms, when it comes to furniture placement, the bed position is very important. First of all, your child's bed should not be right across the door. Ideally it should have a wall at one side and be in such a position that allows him to easily see the door. So if you manage to place the bed in a corner that would make the child feel secure and sleep better.

Also, the position in which the child sleeps can influence the time he wakes up and how deep he sleeps. If your child has problems waking up, you should think of changing his bed position so he can sleep with his head towards East or South. Respectively, if he has light sleep, his head should be towards North or West.

Try to keep the central sector of the bedroom floor free for them to use as they please. Whether this is for their games, their projects or simply wrestling with their siblings, it needs to be open and free for the circulation of Chi.

EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) are harsh energies emitted by electronic devices. They also decrease the body’s production of melatonin. Arrange furniture so that your child’s body is away from computer towers, CRT computer monitors, and power strips. Keep them away from TVs, too.

Look at what your child sees every day. A happy family photo visible from the child's bed is comforting to see before they fall asleep and when they awaken. Flowers picture in pastel colours is something else which can bring positive feelings and relaxing atmosphere.

Creating a comfortable, harmonious bedroom encourages a good night’s sleep. And a good night’s rest promotes a refreshed, healthy child.
