Baby’s skin is so sensitive!
Even the touch of their clothes and diapers, if not proper or using lotions and creams full of chemicals, may cause severe skin irritation, or even allergy reaction and eczema. The best thing you can do as a parent it to provide the best possible care for your baby’s skin. “Green”, organic, natural products is a great option, and not necessary an expensive one. So, let’s talk about...
Diapers
The happily living in a womb baby is now born, naked, so natural and innocent, surrounded by the nice touch of the air only. And then… here it comes – one of the very first things her skin touches, is the nappy…
Do you have any idea how many nappies your baby will use before the potty training begins – around 6,000! Wow! Multiply this number by an average cost of 22p and you will be spending a fortune! Despite, we are spending a fortune for nappies, full of lotions and chemicals, which will irritate your baby’s skin. And then we start wondering where that nappy rash came from! And there is another thing - green parents should remember that diapers account for an enormous amount of landfill waste that does not biodegrade. So, the first thing to consider is choosing the right nappy.
Cloth diapers: Reusable diapers aren’t what they used to be 10 years ago. Go for fitted cloth diapers with Velcro or snap closures for convenience, made from an eco-friendly material such as hemp, bamboo, or organic cotton. Use an organic cotton cover that is both warm and breathable, minimizing diaper rash and cold bottoms at night. Use either removable or flushable liners and when washing either use a laundering service or wash at home at lower temperatures.
Biodegradable diapers: Made with plant-based plastics (also known as bioplastics), these diapers non-petroleum based and are great.
Hybrid diapers: Today there are hybrid diapers on the market, which have removable inserts that can safely biodegrade when flushed. They are breathable and their plastic-free flushable refills keep babies dry and happy, so they’re less likely to get diaper rash. That kind of nappies is usually free of: elemental chlorine, no perfumes, plastic layer, latex, inks or dyes.
Baby Wipes
Diaper wipes, even when say “sensitive” on the label, commonly include propylene glycol (a binder also found in antifreeze), parabens (used as preservatives, which may cause skin irritation, contact dermatitis and Rosacea) and perfume, which can be made from up to 600 different chemicals and is another skin irritant. Try using pure natural organic cotton wool and water – the most natural, gentle-to-skin, and earth-friendly method. Also avoid disposable changing mats and perfumed diaper bags.
